SpartanNash is shutting down a plant in Landover, Maryland, according to a recent WARN Notice in Maryland. The closure impacts 141 workers.
Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), employers with more than 100 employees must give at least 60 days’ notice of facility closures or mass layoffs.
“As part of our continuous improvement, we regularly evaluate our supply chain network to identify ways to operate more efficiently and effectively. The changes we’ve made to our ways of working have positioned us to enhance the support we provide to our customers and to grow,” SpartanNash said in an emailed comment when asked about the closure.
The WARN notice lists the effective date for the layoffs as Sept. 30, though it's unclear if that's the date the facility will close. A SpartanNash spokesperson didn't respond with further details by press time.
The company said it is “committed to ensuring this is a smooth transition for our Associates and customers.”
SpartanNash Military, a division of SpartanNash that delivers products to U.S. military commissaries and exchanges, noted that the Landover facility became operational in 2012. The facility was at the time run by Nash Finch, which merged with Spartan Stores in 2013 to form SpartanNash.
The facility closure marks the latest in a string of distribution center changes for the grocery wholesaler and retailer in recent years.
In mid-2022, SpartanNash announced the nearly $30 million sale of four distribution facilities in Indiana, North Dakota, Florida and Ohio to investment firm Provender Partners. Earlier that year, the grocery wholesaler and retailer expanded its distribution footprint to the West Coast by launching operations out of Coastal Pacific Food Distributors’ 500,000-square-foot, multi-temperature distribution center in Stockton, California.
At the start of last year, SpartanNash added a 300,000-square-foot distribution center in Menominee, Michigan, to its portfolio of facilities with the acquisition of independent grocery wholesaler Great Lakes Foods.
SpartanNash’s website lists 20 distribution centers spanning more than a dozen states, including the Landover center and facility with Coastal Pacific Food Distributors.
SpartanNash brought in $9.7 billion in net sales during its fiscal year 2023, up nearly 1% from the prior year. The company has undergone a recent supply chain transformation to boost warehouse output.
