Publix plans to open three new supermarkets in Kentucky as the Florida-based grocery chain continues its ongoing expansion in the Bluegrass State.
The stores, in the cities of Georgetown, Louisville and Owensboro, will all span approximately 50,000 square feet, and the Georgetown and Owensboro locations will each sit next to a Publix Liquors location.
The retailer has signed leases for all three of the new stores but has not determined when they will begin operations, according to press releases.
The Georgetown store, set for Elkhorn Village Center, will be the first Publix location in that city, WKYT reported, while the location Publix plans to open at Yellow Banks Square in Owensboro will be the chain’s second location in that city, Publix spokesperson Jared Glover said in a statement. The Publix in Louisville’s Blankenbaker Plaza is slated to be Publix’s fourth location in Kentucky’s largest municipality.
Publix opened its first store in Kentucky — where rival Kroger runs more than 100 stores — in January 2024 in a Louisville shopping center about four miles from the site of its newly announced store in the city. Publix, which currently operates four stores in the Bluegrass State, is preparing to open its second and third locations in Louisville in early September, WHAS reported last week.
Publix, which operates more than 1,400 stores in eight Southeastern states, debuted its newest locations, in Brookhaven, Georgia, and Bradenton and Port Saint Lucie, Florida, during the second half of July. The company recorded $59.7 billion in sales during fiscal year 2024, up 4.6% from the year before.
