Meijer is known for large stores — and this week the supercenter operator made a big splash, adding three more of its spacious signature locations to its fleet across the Midwest on a single day.
The new stores, all of which debuted on Tuesday, are located in Hillsdale, Michigan, and the Ohio cities of North Canton and Alliance.
All three of the locations feature more than 600 types of produce and a selection of around 150 USDA-certified organic products along with an array of general merchandise, the retailer said. They also each include baby, pet, clothing, beauty care and floral departments along with a pharmacy and garden center.
The Michigan-based company said it is on track to open or remodel about 20 stores in Ohio by 2025, adding that it is spending almost $500 million on the projects.
At 159,000 square feet each, the Meijer stores that opened this week are among the smaller supercenters the company operates. The retailer runs about 240 supercenters in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin, with the locations ranging in size from 150,000 to 250,000 square feet.
Meijer has also been working to expand its fleet of smaller-format stores, which includes grocery stores and neighborhood markets.
In January, the company opened the fifth location in its fleet of Fairfax Market supermarkets in Cleveland. The 40,000-square-foot store, located in a public-private development designed to help alleviate food insecurity and promote economic growth in the city, is the first Fairfax Market outside Michigan.
In addition to the Fairfax Market concept, Meijer also has a a medium-sized retail format known as Meijer Grocery that brings many of the non-food items that define its supercenters to grocery stores that span between 75,000 and 90,000 square feet. The retailer currently operates two Meijer Grocery stores, in Lake Orion and Macomb Township, Michigan.
