As frictionless checkout options expand at grocery and convenience stores, Hy-Vee is extending its Scan & Go program to more locations, according to a recent press release.
The grocer is bringing the mobile checkout technology powered by FutureProof Retail to an unspecified number of stores following a launch last year at select locations in Des Moines, Iowa. The technology is currently available at “several dozen” Hy-Vee locations.
Customers can use the Scan & Go app on their mobile phones to scan items and pay in-app. For weighted items, like produce, shoppers can scan a barcode on the scale screen. The Scan & Go app shows what items have been added to their carts and what the total is, then shoppers can apply available promotions or coupons. Customers can also earn Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Rewards.
When they are done shopping, customers can exit the store after scanning a QR code.
The announcement about the expansion noted that Hy-Vee was able to integrate FutureProof Retail’s technology with its existing systems “in a matter of months” and that the Scan & Go solution is integrated with the grocer’s existing point-of-sale and promotion systems.
FutureProof Retail also powers the scan-and-go programs in place at New York City-based Westside Market and Big Y.
Hy-Vee is among a list of grocers and convenience stores, including Wegman’s, Walmart and BJ’s, that offer scan-and-go technology. Last summer, Sam’s Club started piloting the ability for its members to use its Scan & Go tool to buy as well as ship bulky items to their homes.
