- Dollar General’s Executive Vice President of Store Operations, Steve Sunderland, plans to leave the company, effective Jan. 19, according to a Friday announcement.
- The retailer’s current executive vice president of growth and emerging markets, Steve Deckard, will transition into the “expanded role” of executive vice president of store operations and development.
- Dollar General has undergone numerous leadership changes in recent months, including firing its CEO back in October less than a year after appointing him.

In his new role, Deckard will oversee store operations across Dollar General retail locations, including Mi Súper Dollar General in Mexico and Popshelf stores, as well as the corporate store operations teams. He will also lead the company’s domestic and international store operations as he continues to lead the real estate, asset protection and the retailer’s “Wellbeing strategies”, according to the announcement.
During his 18-year career with Dollar General, Deckard has served in a number of executive roles overseeing financial planning and shrink, store operations, and emerging markets, per his LinkedIn profile. Dollar General in the press release noted Deckard’s critical leadership role in the company’s expansion into Mexico while he served as senior vice president of emerging markets.
Sunderland plans to depart from Dollar General after nearly 10 years with the retailer.
Neither Dollar General’s announcement nor Sunderland’s LinkedIn indicated his next career moves after leaving the company.
Dollar General has made other notable executive and c-suite changes in recent months.
In October, the company dismissed Jeffery Owen and brought back the executive he replaced, Todd Vasos, to serve as CEO. Dollar General stated this change was to “restore stability and confidence in the company moving forward.”
In July, Dollar General’s then chief strategy officer, Donny Lau, left the company for chicken chain Zaxby’s.
