Boar’s Head on Tuesday recalled an additional 71 ready-to-eat meat and poultry products less than a week after its initial recall for products potentially adulterated by Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a press release.
The expansion includes products produced in its Jarratt, Virginia, facility between May 10 and July 29 under Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. The recall includes meat intended for slicing at retail delis as well as select packaged items, according to the announcement.
Two Ahold Delhaize chains — The Giant Company and Stop & Shop — released statements alerting their customers to the expanded recall. Both announcements state that the grocers have removed all impacted products that were for sale both online and in-store as well as discarded all other open deli meats and cheeses that could have been contaminated. The grocers also noted they are thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing their deli areas and equipment.
Boar’s Head’s original recall announced July 26 included more than 207,000 pounds of deli products. The expanded recall includes an additional 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry items.
FSIS stated it is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as state public health partners to investigate the “multistate outbreak of L. monocytogenes” infections. As of Tuesday, the FSIS reported more than 30 people have been identified as sick across 13 states, including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths, due to the contaminated deli products.
