Dive Brief:
- Amazon is allowing shoppers on its platform to earn rewards while purchasing groceries for delivery from Weis Markets, according to a Tuesday emailed announcement.
- The Weis Rewards loyalty program is available to all customers ordering from the grocery chain via Amazon and lets shoppers save on in-store purchases as well as fuel.
- Weis marks Amazon’s first-ever loyalty program integration on its platform, the e-commerce giant said.
Dive Insight:
Shoppers can begin earning Weis Rewards points on purchases from the grocer that are ordered on Amazon by linking their rewards card ID number to their Amazon account, per Amazon’s website. New members can join the loyalty program via Weis Markets’ website or mobile app.
Customers can earn one Weis Reward point for every dollar spent on qualifying Weis Markets goods purchased through Amazon’s platform. Points are then automatically applied for grocery delivery orders and can be redeemed in-store on select grocery items as well as at Gas N’ Go locations for fuel.
Linking the grocer’s loyalty program to Amazon follows the lead of other third-party delivery companies making grocers’ store loyalty programs accessible to shoppers on their platforms.
Instacart, for example, allows its customers to link their retailer loyalty or membership cards to their accounts to receive select benefits. The company also has a “Stores to Help You Save” section that allows customers to browse retailers offering in-store pricing or loyalty savings.
In addition to integrating Weis’ rewards program, the companies launched same-day delivery in “additional cities” across New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to the announcement.
Previously, Amazon only delivered Weis Markets orders to five cities in Pennsylvania and Maryland. This service now includes the two additional states and spans 17 cities total, an Amazon spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
For a limited time as part of the recent announcement, Amazon Prime members can access free delivery on all Weis orders totaling more than $10, per the press release.
Along with Weis, the e-commerce giant provides delivery from Bristol Farms, Cardenas Markets and Save Mart.
The announcement builds on Amazon’s recent changes to its grocery delivery offering. Earlier this month, the company said it now offers grocery delivery and free pickup to non-Prime members where its Amazon Fresh stores and online services operate, noting plans to extend this to Whole Foods Market shoppers who aren’t Prime members.
